Cass sighed, gathered up the quilt, and hobbled over to where he sat. “Let me see.”

He leaned forward and she gasped. His back was a mess of deep scratches crusted with dried blood.

“Come on.” She headed for the bathroom. “Do we have any hot water?”

“I turned on the propane water heater while you were sleeping. You were shivering so hard earlier I thought a hot shower might be just what you needed when you woke up.”

She led the way into the bathroom, closed the toilet seat, and pointed at it. “Sit down. The light in here is pretty dim. Turn sideways a little.”

She took a washcloth from the stack on a shelf above the toilet and filled the sink with hot water. Dipping the cloth in, she gingerly dabbed at the worst of the scrapes.

“Ouch!”

“Don’t be such a baby,” she snapped. “Where’s the big tough lawman who got all these scars? You’re lucky I’m not smacking your ass with a wooden board.”

“Yeah, well, if you don’t take it easy on me, I may have to do it again. Besides, I had heavy-duty painkillers to get me through those injuries.”

He let out a curse.

“I found it!” she said triumphantly. “It’s not a thorn. It looks more like a long splinter. You must have run up against a dead branch at some point. A piece of it broke off and stuck in your back. Lean forward a little more.”

She rinsed out the cloth and laid it across his back then turned and headed out of the room. “I have a pair of tweezers in my bag,” she called back. “Stay put. I’ll be right back.”

Cass walked into the kitchen and let out a shaky sigh. She needed a moment alone. She was terrible at this sort of thing, hated the sight of blood. Not to mention the fact that being so close to Zander Cole, or whatever his name was, made her knees go weak. Running the damp cloth over his back, she found herself wondering if any of the scratches he bore had come from her nails raking his skin as he rammed his cock inside her last night.

She shook her head, disgusted. Maybe he wasn’t a criminal. But he’d lied to her over and over and, in her book, that was just as bad. She vowed to ignore the shivers of desire that poured through her body every time she touched him. Tomorrow, she’d be out of here. And she could concentrate on wiping Zander Cole– no, damn it, whoever he was– out of her mind.

Hiking the quilt up again, she rummaged in her makeup bag for a pair of tweezers. Clearly this would be a two-hand job. The quilt simply wouldn’t stay up. Cass couldn’t bear the thought of pulling jeans on over her sore bottom, so she ran upstairs and put on the white dress shirt he’d worn when she met him.

Sleek and soft, it hung midway down her thighs and smelled of him– musk with a hint of woodsy aftershave.
